MODESTO, Calif. --
The Modesto Police Department said Tuesday that one of its officers was arrested on drug and embezzlement charges after an internal investigation that began in February found enough evidence to take action.
Police said Anthony Trock -- a four-year veteran with the department -- was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail, stripped of his law enforcement powers and placed on administrative leave.
"Through the criminal investigation, detectives discovered, on several occasions, Trock seized illegal drugs from individuals he contacted while in the performance of his law enforcement duties and failed to book the evidence. On at least one occasion, he furnished the seized drugs, that being marijuana, to an adult individual," police said in a news release.
The internal investigation involving Trock was sparked by a citizen complaint alleging misconduct, Modesto police said.
He was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement, as well as possession of cocaine and methamphetamine.
He is also suspected of furnishing marijuana to another person.
"Police officers are not above the law, and we will vigorously investigate those who break the law and violate the public's trust," Modesto Police Chief Michael Harden said in a news release
