HOUSTON --

A man lied to police when he reported a car stolen in northeast Houston with a baby inside, officials said Thursday.

Police were called to a parking lot in the 8600 block of Mesa Drive about 1 p.m. when the owner of a barber shop called 911 and said a child was inside a car when it was stolen.

When questioned, the man said he told police a child was involved because he knew officers would get to the scene faster, police said.

The man then said he was in the process of buying a white Chevy Trailblazer and was on a test drive with the vehicle's owner. He said that when they got back to the barber shop, the vehicle owner drove off with the man's $8,500. A child and two adults were also in the Trailblazer.

The man said he was sorry he lied.

The barber shop owner could face a charge of filing a false report.

The owner of the Trailblazer could also face charges, police said.

The child was dropped off at school and later picked up by his mother, investigators said.
