MIDDLETON, Mass. --

A customer with a prosthetic leg foiled a robbery at a Middleton convenience store Wednesday night, the Salem News reported.

The customer, who police did not identify, tripped the robber as he attempted to escape, police said.

A clerk joined in the struggle that followed, and the two held onto the robber until police arrived.

Eric F. Homan, 23, of Peabody, was arrested and charged with armed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

"Everybody was really lucky," police officer Robert Currier told the newspaper. "Attempting to intercede in such a situation, he said, should only be done "with safety in mind."
