North Andover High School's junior prom took an unexpected turn Friday night when four students became "violently ill" after eating brownies laced with marijuana, police said.

The students ate the brownies before boarding a bus to the Atkinson, N.H., Resort and Country Club, where they began throwing up in the bathroom, said Atkinson police Chief Philip Consentino.

"The kids started getting sick, and someone said it might have been in the brownies," said Todd Latorre, whose 16-year-old son, Joe, was at the prom.

One of the students was taken to the hospital, Consentino said, and the prom, which was planned to last until 11 p.m., ended an hour early.

The students were bused back to school, where they had to be picked up by a parent.

"They lost an hour of the prom because of other kids' mistakes," Latorre said. "It's unfortunate, because they were looking forward to this all year, and a lot of them went to a lot of expense. But we're glad the school reacted the way they did.

"I think it was the wise thing to do, and hopefully, they'll take action."

School Superintendent Christopher Hottel and Principal Carla A. Scuzzarella did not return calls last night.

Because no crime was committed in Atkinson, Consentino said his department will turn the case over to North Andover police. Chief Richard Stanley refused to comment.

Consentino said this is the first time his department has dealt with pot-laced brownies on prom night.
