VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. --

The police chief of Oak Hill almost lost her job and was nearly demoted to an officer during a meeting Monday night.

Residents have been urging city leaders, to get rid of Chief Diane Young, for mismanaging her 8 officer department.

The mayor wanted to fire Young, but during Monday’s meeting, city commissioners didn’t vote on the issue because they were so torn over the issue.

But Young could still lose her job. Commissioners could vote again after they get the results an audit of the department next month.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is still investigating whether or not Young may have covered up for officers who are accused of cheating on exams to get promotions.

The chief, who spoke to WFTV for first time Monday night, says if commissioners voted to demote, she might accept it.

"If I can serve in a different capacity and still do a good job, there's a possibility I may do that,” Young said.
