ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. --
A Florida police officer has died after being shot near downtown St. Petersburg.
Officials said officer David Crawford, 46, is the city's third officer to be killed in the line of duty in less than a month.
Police told the St. Petersburg Times the shooting happened after officers were called to the area around 10:30 p.m. Monday to investigate a report of a suspicious person who may have been a prowler.
Crawford was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say the officer was shot multiple times but returned fire. The suspect fled the area and was being sought early Tuesday.
Just last month, two St. Petersburg police officers were killed as they helped serve a warrant on a man with a long criminal history.
