JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --

The father of an 8-year-old girl who witnessed her stepmother and stepbrother get shot during a police shooting nearly one year ago has filed a new lawsuit against the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Last March, a robbery suspect carjacked a car along Baymeadows Road. Police fired 42 shots at that car as they tried to stop the suspect.

Alexis Cooper, who was 7 years old at the time, was in that car and wasn't hit.

Her stepmother, Joann Cooper, and stepbrother, Daniel Crichton, were wounded.

Lawyers for the girl's father, Carl Cooper, said the shooting caused emotional and psychological injuries to her.

Crichton was hit twice in the chest and upper arm and was hospitalized for 10 days.

Carl Cooper had filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against JSO last year. That lawsuit was later dropped.

This suit is being filed in state court.

Two of the five officers who fired shots resigned.
