A police officer being dragged by a sport utility vehicle he had pulled over in a traffic stop in Texas shot and killed the driver, authorities said.

Three children, ages 7, 8 and 11, were in the back seat of the vehicle when the shooting occurred Monday night in Fort Worth, police said.

They were not injured and later were released to family members, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

The shooting occurred after the officer, who was not identified, pulled over the black SUV on a routine traffic stop near a gas station.

In a records check, the officer found the driver was wanted on warrants and attempted to arrest him, whereupon "the driver explained that he was not going to jail," Sgt. Pedro Criado, Fort Worth police spokesman, said.

As the officer tried to pull the man out of the vehicle, the suspect began driving and dragged the officer for 2 blocks, police said.

"Fearing for his life," Criado said, the officer pulled his weapon and shot the driver, who was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer was also taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, the newspaper reported.
