PORTLAND, Ore. --
A police officer shot outside a southeast Portland home has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.
The wounded officer, whose name hasn't been released, is expected to make a full recovery after being shot while walking up to a home in the 3000 block of Southeast 10th Avenue.
Portland police were first called to the home to investigate a report of a man threatening to hurt himself by taking pills. They were met with gunfire from inside the home, and a 13-year-veteran with the police bureau was struck in the lower abdomen, police say. A second officer suffered minor injuries from shrapnel.
Several officers then responded and returned cover fire toward the shooter while the officer was rescued and taken to a safer area.
Hostage negotiators then reached the suspect, 61-year-old Ralph Turner, by phone, police say. Turner walked out of the home and surrendered to police a little more than an hour after the shooting.
Turner will be arraigned in a Portland courtroom today at 2:30 p.m.
