REDDING -- A man is dead and a Redding police officer was wounded in a shooting after a traffic stop in south Redding Monday morning.

Redding police pulled over a teal Pontiac Grand Am at 11:17 a.m. at South Market and Elmwood streets. The motorist had been driving erratically, according to scanner reports.

An officer was about to arrest one of the two men in the car when the officer saw he had a gun, Redding Police Capt. Scott Mayberry said. The unidentified man shot the arresting officer in the arm, Mayberry said.

A backup officer shot the man in the car who had wounded the officer. The man was taken away in an ambulance and later pronounced dead, Mayberry said.

The man killed in the shooting is not a juvenile, police said at a press conference this afternoon.

They would not release his name or age.

The unidentified officer was taken to Mercy Medical Center by car. His injuries were not life-threatening, said Stew Jankowitz, deputy Shasta County District Attorney.

Authorities said they will release the name of the officer involved in the shooting in the next couple of days as dual investigations of the shooting unfold.

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office will handle the criminal investigation. Redding police will conduct its own confidential administrative investigation.

The wounded officer and the officer who shot the suspect will be on administrative leave during the investigation, Police Chief Peter Hansen said.

Police detained the other man and a woman in the Grand Am.

As a California Highway Patrol helicopter hovered high above, an army of Redding police, Shasta County Sheriff's deputies, Shasta County District Attorney's office investigators and CHP officers on the ground closed off a portion of Market Street at Angelo Street near the shooting scene with their patrol cars, yellow crime tape and flares.
