March 16--NEWTOWN Two former police officers have been arrested after an investigation into the alleged theft of police union funds.

Andrew Stinson and Domenic Costello turned themselves in to Danbury police Wednesday morning, Newtown Police Capt. Joe Rios said.

The investigation began Oct. 15, police said, after members of the Newtown police union told the chief they found "irregularities" involving missing checks and cash in the union's treasury, according to a release from the department.

They converted more than $90,000 each for their own personal use over a three-year period, said Newtown Chief Michael Kehoe.

Both resigned in January after the investigation began, police said.

The money came from 40 years' worth of fundraising and investments, union officials said.

Costello, 33, of Stratford, is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, two counts of first-degree larceny, one count of first-degree accessory to larceny and one count of third-degree larceny.

Stinson, 34, of Watertown, is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, three counts of first-degree larceny, one count of second-degree larceny and one count of third-degree larceny.

Both were released on promises to appear. Their next court date is March 25 in Superior Court in Danbury.
