EAST HAVEN -- State police have been called in to investigate the disappearance of "a sizeable amount of cash" from the Police Department's temporary holding area, Deputy Chief John Mannion said Friday.

He didn't say exactly how much money was missing.

"This loss was identified through a routine administrative process," Mannion said, announcing the missing money in a written statement on the same day that an outside agency's report calling for the revamping and tightening-up of a number of department policies and processes was made public.

"The decision to notify the state police to investigate this loss is an example of the department's position to be credible to the public we serve," said Mannion, a retired state trooper and former commanding officer of the Connecticut State Police's Central District Major Crime Squad.

Neither Mannion nor acting Chief Gaetano "Guy" Nappi were available for questions on the missing money.

Mannion's statement said that he was "unable to release further details as this is now an ongoing investigation."
