MODESTO, Calif. --
A man who escaped Saturday after being taken in for a mental evaluation was killed by an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer, Modesto police said.
Police said the man, who was not identified, was taken at 11 a.m. for a 72-hour evaluation and escaped six hours later.
The man ran into a nearby neighborhood, went into the canal and tried to break into several homes, police said.
Authorities said he took a piece of glass from a window he busted and cut his throat. That's when police said the off-duty CHP officer confronted him.
Witnesses said he raised a piece of glass and came toward the officer, who then shot and killed him.
Police were investigating the incident.
