RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. --
Police said a woman who may have been suffering from type of mental illness drove a police cruiser after being detained inside it and struck a truck Sunday afternoon.
Riviera Beach police said they responded to a call about a sexual assault in the 1300 block of North Congress Avenue and found Crystal Ivory behaving in such a way that officers concluded she may be experiencing an episode of mental illness.
Police said they put handcuffs on Ivory and detained her in the back of a police cruiser while they were investigating for her safety and everyone else at the scene.
Police said Ivory managed to shift her handcuffed wrists to the front of her body, squeezed through a small porthole-type window and got into the driver's seat.
Police said Ivory then drove north on Congress Avenue to Blue Heron Boulevard, where she struck a white pickup truck.
Police said Ivory continued to drive even after hitting the truck and came to a stop near a bank parking lot on the west side of Congress Avenue.
Ivory and the truck's driver were taken to a hospital for treatment.
No charges have been filed.
