NEW ALBANY, Ind. --
A man in southern Indiana lead police on a high-speed chase through Floyd, Clark, Scott and Jackson counties in a stolen ambulance on Saturday.
Police involved in the chase said they've never seen anything like it before.
"This is one of those cases where you sit back and you think, 'What in the world was this guy thinking?'" said Sgt. Jerry Goodin with Indiana State Police.
Police said the chase began when two EMS workers were having lunch at a KFC in New Albany.
"One of the ambulance drivers noticed that the ambulance was driving away," said Goodin.
The EMS driver immediately called police told them about the stolen ambulance. That's when an off-duty trooper spotted the ambulance headed north on Interstate-65.
"We got the information relayed and we actually had troopers who caught up with the ambulance," said Goodin. "Troopers tried to stop the ambulance and it refused to stop and a chase ensued."
The chase continued north on Interstate-65 with the speeds reaching up 75 mph, police said.
"At mile marker 39 troopers threw out stop sticks, in an attempt to stop the ambulance," Goodin said. "When he swerved to miss this stop sticks, he crashed into an Indiana state police car. At that point in time the officer drew his weapon and fired several shots at the ambulance."
Troopers said the suspect, Larry Loughman, crossed the median into the south bound lanes, then eventually came back across the median into the north bound lanes.
"At the 49 mile marker, stop sticks were deployed again, and this time Loughman ran over the stop sticks. The ambulance started slowing down, but it didn't stop it," Goodin said.
A few miles later, troopers threw down more stop sticks. This time, they worked, forcing the ambulance to stop.
However, although the ambulance was stopped, Loughman was not ready to give up yet, police said.
"As officers approached the ambulance, the driver refused to follow their commands, at that point in time, officers (used a Taser on) him and he was taken into custody," Goodin said.
Loughman was taken to the Floyd County jail and is facing a laundry list of charges in all five counties he drove through.
Investigators said they are still trying to determine why Loughman stole the ambulance. No injuries were reported.
