President Elect Barack Obama’s choice of Eric H. Holder, Jr. for the position of Attorney General is an outstanding one. Mr. Holder is an accomplished attorney with demonstrated achievements and highly regarded by legal veterans, like myself, who work in the law enforcement arena and criminal justice system. Despite any criticism that is now floating around concerning his alleged failure to prevent the pardon of Mr. Marc Rich, he likely was caught between a rock and a hard place--particularly if he was an “at will†employee at the time. It is highly probable he had to walk a fine line in the decision-making process and may not have been the ultimate decider despite being tagged as the recipient of blame. Mr. Holder has a demonstrated record of professional achievements. His knowledge base is broad, yet relevant, and his awareness is critically focused on vitally important areas. Historically he has recognized domestic violence, child abuse, and hate crimes as crucial components that need attention, and he remains amenable to tackling other problems that are monumental in nature and challenging in scope. Holder is one who works cooperatively with a broad range of agencies and extends a welcoming reception to outside jurisdictions to work collaboratively toward achieving mutual goals. He maintains a listening ear with an astute awareness of the need to find ways to resolve problems and discover alternatives that work to create safer communities. Holder is reality based in his outlook and sensible in his judgments. Throughout his professional tenure, he has engaged people and resources to promote public safety at its best. Holder, in all respects, is a distinguished professional who would be a welcome asset to public service in the Obama administration. He should be confirmed without hesitation. I would like to be the first in line to extend a congratulatory hand along with a very warm welcome.
