A Georgia police officer was shot and killed at the end of an unrelated traffic stop late Monday.

Warm Springs Police Officer Chris Fisher was sitting in his cruiser at 11:57 p.,m. after finishing a traffic stop in a motel parking lot, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) stated in a news release. That's when a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado pulled up beside Fisher’s patrol car, and the driver fired multiple shots.

Fisher was struck by the gunfire, and he was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver, later identified as Jimmy Lee Steverson, fled the parking lot, and a Blue Alert was issued as a massive multi-agency manhunt ensued.

At 11:39 a.m. Tuesday, an Anderson County sheriff's deputy in South Carolina pulled over a car in Anderson. Steverson, a passenger in the vehicle, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he was taken the hospital, where he later died.

The GBI continues to investigate the shooting.
