A Tennessee correctional officer was stabbed and killed by an inmate Tuesday.

Correctional Officer Dustin Pedigo was working at the Morgan County Correctional Complex in Wartburg when the attack by the inmate—identified as Reginald Steed—happened, the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) stated in a news release. Steed fatally stabbed Pedigo, according to District Attorney General Russell Johnson, but no details have been released about what led to the assault.

"This is a heartbreaking moment for our department and for the entire TDOC family," Commissioner Frank Strada said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time."

Steed is currently serving a 27-year sentence for aggravated assault, especially aggravated robbery and attempted voluntary manslaughter. He has been moved to another facility, stated Johnson.

The complex was secured following the incident, and it remains on lockdown, stated the department. The department’s Critical Incident Stress Management team is providing counseling and support services for the complex's staff.

"(The) TDOC investigative division is handling the investigation and it will take some time to put the case file together for our office to review," stated Johnson.
