Oregon State Police Sgt. John Burright died in May from injuries he suffered during a line-of-duty traffic accident in September 2001.

A funeral procession and memorial service were held for an Oregon State Police sergeant who died from injuries suffered in a 2001 line-of-duty traffic accident.

Family, friends and fellow troopers were among the roughly 400 people who attended the service for Sgt. John Burright in Salem on Wednesday, the Statesman Journal reports. Officers from around the country—including the Texas State Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the U.S. Border Patrol—also came to pay their respects

Burright, who died in May, was seriously injured in an incident Sept. 4, 2001. He, along with another trooper and an Albany police officer, had stopped to help a family who was having vehicle issues.

That's when a driver who was falling asleep struck all three. The other trooper and the police officer died at the scene, and Burright was paralyzed and suffered brain damage, injuries that required him to have 24-hour care.
