Va. Police Officer Who Responded to Attack on Pentagon Dies From 9/11-Related Cancer

Arlington County Police Cpl. Barry Foust, who responded to the Pentagon attack on Sept. 11, 2001, died after battling cancer linked to his work at the crash site.

Joining the Arlington County Police Department in 1986, Foust started as a patrol officer before becoming a certified Motor Officer. He served with the department for 32 years and retired in 2019.

Following his retirement, Foust worked at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department from March 2020 to December 2022. In December 2022, he rejoined the Arlington County Police Department as the agency faced staffing issues.

"His remarkable resilience and contributions to the Arlington community will never be forgotten and he leaves an enduring and lasting impact on our agency," said Penn.

Foust's death marks the eighth law enforcement line-of-duty death in Arlington County's history. His death is the county's second line-of-duty death connected to 9/11-related cancer.
