A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper died in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday.

Master Trooper Stien Davis Jr. was traveling in his cruiser just after midnight along North Carolina Highway 130 in Roberson County when the crash happenedCol. Freddy Johnson, Jr., the agency's commander, stated in an agency news release. Davis lost control of his vehicle, which left the roadway and overturned in a swampy area.

It's unclear what led to Davis losing control of his cruiser or if he was responding to a call when the crash happened.

Davis served in Troop B, District 7 in Robeson County. He was a member of the 141st Basic Patrol School and "served our state and the Robeson County area with distinction," Johnson stated.

The crash is under investigation.
