An Indiana police officer was killed and another officer was wounded Monday when a suspect opened fire during a domestic call, leading to a manhunt that ended with the accused gunman's capture.

Beech Grove Police Officer Brian Elliott and two other officers responded to reports of a disturbance at an apartment complex just after 6 p.m., according to the department. Shots were fired shortly after police arrived at the scene, and Elliott and another officer were struck by gunfire.

Elliott was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. The other officer, who hasn't been identified, was in stable condition and is expected to survive.

No details were released on what led to the shooting.

A search for the suspect—identified as Kenneth Terrell Johnson—ensued following the shooting, WISH-TV reports. Johnson was found and apprehended by a SWAT unit about an hour after Elliott's death was announced thanks to a resident's tip, which pointed police to the apartment complex's shared laundry area only a few hundred yards from the initial shooting.

"(Elliott) has left a lasing impression and legacy not only on the department, but the city," Police Chief Michael Maurice said during a hospital new conference. "This is a devastating loss for our department and our city."

Elliott, 33, joined the department in September 2024. Before that, he served with the Marion County Sheriff's Office in Indiana for about four years.

"At the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, Elliott was an assistant squad leader, an honor graduate, and the Glenda Mercer Memorial Award winner for top academic achievement," the department said about Elliott joining the Beech Grove force in a 2024 social media post.

Elliott is survived by his wife and his parents.
