A Colorado police officer died Wednesday from injuries he sustained from an on-duty fall.

Walsenburg Police Sgt. Henry Ezell, a community service officer with the department, had been eating at a restaurant when he fell and injured his head, The Chronicle-News reports. He was hospitalized and later died from his injuries.

"CSO Sergeant Ezell served the Walsenburg Police Department with unwavering dedication, integrity, and compassion," the department stated in a news release, adding that his death was a "profound loss" to the agency. "Throughout his career, he exemplified what it means to be a public servant — leading by example, mentoring others, and placing the safety and well-being of the community above all else. His commitment to duty and to the people of Walsenburg will never be forgotten."

Flags were flown at half-staff in Walsenburg on Wednesday, according to the World Journal. A motorcade that included city employees transported his body from Pueblo to a Walsenburg funeral home.

"Beyond the badge, CSO Sgt. Ezell was a devoted husband, loving father, respected colleague, trusted leader, and friend," the department stated. "His presence made our department stronger, and his legacy will continue to guide us in the days and years ahead."
