El Reno Police Sgt. Thomas Duran was helping a pedestrian just before 2 a.m. Oct. 17 when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, according to the Oklahoma Fraternal Order of Police. When officers responded, they found Duran was critically injured, and he was airlifted to an Oklahoma City hospital, the department stated in a release..

Logan Reese Primeaux, 25, was arrested, and he was charged failure to stop at an accident resulting in great bodily injury and assault and battery with a deadly weapon. He is being held in the Canadian County jail.
Duran remained in critical condition until Friday, when he succumbed to his injuries. His organs were harvested for donation.
"Sgt. Duran even in death, continues to serve with selfless dedication to others through organ donation," the department stated. "Sgt. Duran’s decision will offer others a second chance."
Duran was a 14-year veteran with the department. He also was a member of the Edmond Police Department.
"Today, though, we mourn the loss of a father, husband, family member, friend and brother in blue," Mark Nelson, the president of the Oklahoma Fraternal Order of Police, stated in a release. "We mourn with the family and community of El Reno. The entire law enforcement and FOP family mourns the loss of a hero. A man who lived and left this world as he always had: serving sacrificially and giving others the gift of life, as was his wish."
