Ark. Corrections Officer Dies after On-Duty 'Medical Incident'

An Arkansas Department of Corrections officer died after suffering an on-duty medical emergency in July.

Sgt. Fredrick Coleman suffered a "medical incident" that led to his death while working at the Cummins Unit in Lincoln County on July 31, a department spokesperson told KARK-TV. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Coleman was helping another officer in the detention center's Cummins Unit during an all-code assistance call when he collapsed and struck his head on the floor. 

Coleman was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

Coleman joined the department of corrections in 2010, according to his obituary. In 2022, he received the Director's Outstanding Service Award "for his valuable contributions at the Cummins Unit."

"Fredrick's life reflected strength, independence, and unwavering commitment," his obituary stated. "He was a man known for his hard work, deep respect for others, and a love for family that was evident in every role he fulfilled-husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend."

Coleman is survived by his wife, six children and two grandchildren.
