A Florida deputy died Thursday from injuries he suffered while directing traffic in 2023.

Citrus County Sheriff's Deputy Andres "Andy" Lahera was serving as a school resource officer when the May 23, 2023, incident happened, the sheriff's office stated in a news release. He was directing traffic at the Lecanto High School graduation when he was struck by a motorist.

He suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to an out-of-county trauma center, the agency stated at the time. Lahera had "multiple broken bones, fractures, abrasions, and internal injuries," the sheriff's office stated in a 2023 news release.

"For over two years, Andy fought valiantly with the same strength and resolve that defined his career," the sheriff's office stated. "His passing marks the end of a chapter filled with bravery, sacrifice, and love."

Sheriff David Vincent described Lahera, a 14-year veteran of the agency, as a dedicated deputy and family man who served as a school resource officer from 2018 to 2023. 

"Andy fought courageously, and this is a tremendous loss for his family, our agency, and this community. ... We’ve lost a true hero and fighter," Vincent said in a statement.

Lahera is survived by his wife and two sons.
