Chicago Police Investigating Off-Duty Officer's Death at Station

An investigation has been opened following the death of an off-duty officer Thursday morning within the 18th District police station, Chicago police said.

In a memo sent to CPD officers Thursday morning, Superintendent Larry Snelling called for the department to support the deceased officer’s colleagues assigned to the district.

“This was undoubtedly a difficult scene for her fellow officers within the district,” Snelling wrote. “As we support her family and loved ones, we must also support our fellow members who worked alongside her in the 18th District.”

“Grief affects each of us in different ways, and I ask that you each take the time to check in with one another today,” Snelling added.

Officials said the Near North station will be closed as detectives continue their investigation. Service calls to the station will be handled by nearby stations, police said. The identification of the off-duty officer was not released.

Mayor Brandon Johnson released a statement early Thursday.

“Our city mourns the tragic loss of an 18th District Chicago Police officer. Our hearts are shattered and broken over this tragedy. My deepest condolences and ardent prayers are with the officer’s family, loved ones, and fellow officers as we grieve,” he said in the statement. “This tragedy is a reminder that we must carry each other.  Every single day, our officers witness traumatic scenes, and it is our responsibility to provide them with the support they need to navigate that reality. I ask the city to keep the officer’s family and loved ones, 18th District officers and staff, and the entire Chicago Police Department in your prayers during this time of immense grief.”
