Calif. Sheriff's Deputy Fatally Shot Responding to Call

Jan. 14, 2023
Darnell Calhoun is the second Riverside County sheriff's deputy to die in the line of duty in just over two weeks after the agency went nearly two decades without any.

Riverside County sheriff's officials Saturday identified the suspect who shot and killed a deputy Friday afternoon in Lakeland Village as Jesse Navarro, 42, of Lake Elsinore.

Navarro was still in a hospital in critical condition, officials said.

Deputy Darnell Calhoun responded about 4:20 p.m. Friday to the 18000 block of Hilldale Lane on a report of unknown trouble. As Calhoun approached the home, authorities say, Navarro shot him.

A second deputy arrived and engaged in a gun battle with Navarro, critically wounding him.

Calhoun, 30, was rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, but died of his injuries. He was the second deputy to die in the line of duty in 16 days after the department went nearly two decades without an on-duty death.

Calhoun and his wife were expecting a child, Sheriff Chad Bianco said at a Friday night press conference. Calhoun joined the Riverside County Sheriff's Department in February 2022 and was assigned to the Lake Elsinore Station after working with the San Diego Police Department for two years.
