Ky. Deputy, Suspect Fatally Shot Outside Sheriff's Office

Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting in front of the Marshall County Sheriff's Office in Benton that left Calloway County Deputy Jody Cash and an unnamed suspect dead.

A deputy and a suspect were fatally shot outside a Kentucky sheriff's office Monday.

Few details have been released about the shooting, which happened just after 2 p.m. in front of the Marshall County Sheriff's Office in Benton, according to the Kentucky State Police. Calloway County Sheriff's Deputy Jody Cash and an unnamed suspect both suffered gunshot wounds, and they were taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The state police's Critical Incident Response Team, which has state jurisdiction over officer-involved shootings, is investigating the incident. 

"Britainy and I ask Kentuckians to join us in holding the family and loved ones of the Calloway County Deputy in their prayers,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement. “This deputy has paid the ultimate sacrifice today while serving our commonwealth. Let us honor the life, bravery and service of this deputy.”

Cash had previously been a trooper with the Kentucky State Police before joining the Calloway County Sheriff's Office, WKDZ-FM reports. He also served with the Murray State University Police Department and the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office.
