Ga. Sheriff's Deputy Dies after Crash while Directing Traffic

A Georgia sheriff's deputy died after he was struck by a car while directing traffic Wednesday.

Rockdale County Deputy Walter D. Jenkins Jr. had working traffic control along Georgia Hwy. 138 at about 9:30 p.m., WSB-TV reports. That's when he was struck by a car, although no details were released about what led to the accident.

Jenkins was taken to the hospital, where he later died. His body was transported by police escort to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations for an autopsy.

"Last night an angel was called home," the sheriff's office stated in a social media post. 

The car's driver remained at the scene following the crash. It's unclear if the driver will be charged in the incident.

The crash is under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
