Indiana Police Officer Slain at Scene of Crash

Southport Police Lt. Aaron Allan was shot and killed after approaching a vehicle that flipped in a crash.

A Southport, Indiana police lieutenant was shot and killed after approaching a vehicle that flipped in a crash Thursday afternoon.

Lt. Aaron Allan and an officer with the Homecroft Police Department responded the car crash shortly before 3 p.m. near the area of Madison Avenue and Maynard Drive on Indianapolis' south side when the incident occurred, according to The Indianapolis Star.

As the 38-year-old officer approached the car, one of its two occupants opened fire, striking him multiple times.

He was transported to Eskenazi Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Homecroft police officer and an off-duty Johnson County Sheriff's deputy, who was in the area at the time, returned fire and struck the gunman. Both occupants were transported to Eskenazi Hospital and taken into police custody.

Allan had served with the Southport Police Department, which is comprised of about 30 officers who are unpaid volunteers, since 2011 and was promoted to the head of its training division in 2015. He also worked as a police officer for the Franklin Township Schools, a position he left in January, when he joined the Southport Police Department full-time.
