A Carroll County, Virginia Sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash late Thursday night.
Deputy Curtis Allen Bartlett was traveling west on Route 58 with his lights and sirens activated when his cruiser collided with a tractor-trailer making a left-hand turn onto the road from Interstate 77, according to WDBJ-TV.
The four-year veteran, who was responding to a call for assistance with an ongoing pursuit, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The 59-year-old man driving the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash.
The two suspects being pursued by deputies were captured a short time later.
Up until last year, Barlett he was a school resource officer and is also a certified K-9 handler and received other teaching certifications from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers. Before joining the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, he was a patrol officer in Albemarle, North Carolina. He previously served as an infantry soldier with the U.S. Army.
