A West Valley City, Utah police officer was intentionally struck and killed by three suspects in a stolen car on Sunday.

Officer Cody Brotherson was attempting to lay down a set of tire spikes on 2200 West when the suspects' car hit him a little after 3 a.m. by a BMW fleeing police, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

The 25-year-old officer was pronounced dead on the scene about 50 yards from his patrol car.

"A West Valley born and bred individual and our hearts are heavy with his loss," Police Chief Lee Russo told reporters. "This man gave his life, so we honor that and this community honors that. It devastates us — that is the bottom line. We are a family."

Brotherson is the first West Valley City police officer killed in the line of duty since the city was formed in 1980.

He served with the West Valley City Police Department for three years and is survived by his parents, two brothers, and fiancee.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
