Las Vegas Metro Police K-9 Killed in Shootout

Las Vegas Metro Police K-9 Nicky was fatally wounded in a shootout was a suspect in a residential neighborhood Thursday morning.

A Las Vegas Metro police dog was fatally shot and the suspected gunman was wounded in a shootout in a residential neighborhood Thursday morning.

Officers responded to the 9800 block of Fast Elk Street after receiving calls of an armed man walking down the street and firing shots around 11:45 a.m., according to The Las Vegas Sun.

The officers, who also received reports that two people were wounded inside a nearby residence, confronted the armed suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon. K-9 Nicky was brought in and gunfire was exchanged between the officers and the suspect.

Nicky was struck and was pronounced dead on the scene. The Belgian Malinois was seriously injured on Feb. 12 after police responded to a disturbance call at an apartment. The K-9 was stabbed multiple times during the encounter but returned to duty in March after undergoing surgery.

The gunman was wounded and transported to University Medical Center. His condition was unknown.

When police entered the home the home the suspect reportedly emerged from, they discovered a man and woman dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

The four officers involved in the shooting were not injured and were placed on paid leave pending departmental reviews.
