Indiana Sheriff's Deputy Succumbs to Wounds

Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz was fatally shot and Sgt. Jordan Buckley was wounded while attempting to serve a warrant Sunday morning.

A Howard County, Indiana Sheriff's deputy and a suspect died and another deputy was wounded in a shooting early Sunday morning.

Deputy Carl Koontz and Sgt. Jordan Buckley were shot while trying to serve arrest and search warrants at a residence in the 300 block of Chandler Street around 12:30 a.m., according to WXIN-TV.

Howard County Sheriff Steven Rogers said that the deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect when no one responded as they announced themselves. Upon entering they were met with gunfire and they fired back. A Russiaville police officer and other deputies pulled the deputies to safety

Both deputies were transported to Howard Regional Hospital before being airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Koontz, a 3-year veteran with the department, succumbed to his injuries after undergoing surgery. Buckley, a 9-year veteran, was listed in stable condition.

"Deputy Koontz was one of our family," Rogers said during a press conference. "Carl will be missed. We appreciate any prayers and support that anyone can give us right now, because we really need the prayers of the people we serve."

The Indiana State Police confirmed that the suspect died following an early morning standoff. The suspect has not been identified and it's unclear how he died.

The 27-year-old deputy is survived by his wife and their young child.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
