West Virginia Trooper Dies During Training

A West Virginia State Police trooper died after collapsing during a training exercise Monday morning.

First Sergeant Joseph G. Portaro was participating in a physical fitness training routine near the grounds of the West Virginia State Police Academy when he suffered a medical emergency, according to a department news release.

Portaro was transported to Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston where he was pronounced dead.

The 50-year-old trooper was a 17-year veteran of the agency and was assigned to the police academy as the Deputy Director of Training.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
