A K-9 with France's National Police was killed Wednesday during a raid targeting the suspected mastermind of the deadly terror attacks in Paris.

Officials said that K-9 Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian Shepherd, was killed during the seven-hour siege on an apartment in the Paris suburb of Saint Denis, according to USA Today.

"Assault and explosives search dogs are indispensable in the missions of the operators of the raid," the National Police said in a statement.

The raid ended with the arrest of seven people with suspected links to the attacks. Two suspects -- including a female suicide bomber who detonated explosives as authorities entered the apartment -- were killed.

Officials couldn't confirm whether Abdelhamid Abaaoud, suspected of planning the suicide bomb and gun attacks that left 129 people dead late Friday, was inside the apartment at the time of the raid.

On social media, people shared pictures of Diesel and tweeted about the dog's service, many used the hashtag #Jesuisunchien, which translates to "I am a dog" in English. Some tweeted #NotAllHeroesAreHuman and the hashtag #RIPDiesel was used almost 3,000 times after the dog's death was announced.

One tweet read: "A dog sacrificing his life for a battle caused by men... He truly can be called our best friend #RIPDiesel#JeSuisChien."
