Tennessee Deputy Killed in Single-Vehicle Wreck

Madison County Sheriff's Deputy Rosemary Vela was responding to a call for back-up early Tuesday morning when she was involved in a fatal crash.

A Madison County, Tennessee Sheriff's deputy was killed in a single-vehicle wreck early Tuesday morning.

Deputy Rosemary Vela was responding to a call for back-up around 2 a.m. on Highway 70 West near Huntersville when the crash occurred, according to The Jackson Sun.

Sheriff John Mehr said that Vela was driving in heavy rain when her vehicle left the road and struck a tree before it came to rest in a creek.

The deputy, who, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vela joined the department in April of this year and had previously worked for the Crockett County Sheriff's Department. She is survived by her 5-year-old son.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
