A police officer in DeKalb County, Georgia was killed in a crash involving a wrong-way driver early Saturday morning.
Officer Kevin Toatley was driving home in his patrol car on South Fulton Parkway near Buffington Road around 12:30 a.m. when his vehicle was struck head-on by a read SUV traveling in the wrong direction on the freeway, according to WSB-TV.
The patrol car burst into flames and the seven year-veteran of the department was transported to Grady Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
There were two adults and three minors inside the SUV at the time of the crash. The driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition and one of the passengers was listed in critical condition at the hospital.
"He was admired by all those who worked with him and was admired by supervisors," DeKalb County Director of Public Safety Cedric Alexander told the news station. "I've had a chance to talk with many of them tonight and try to help comfort them."
Funeral arrangements are pending.
