Illinois Sheriff's Deputy Succumbs to Wounds

McHenry County Deputy Dwight Maness, who was seriously wounded last year, died Monday.

A McHenry County, Ill. Sheriff's deputy who was shot multiple times by a gunman last year died Monday.

Deputy Dwight Maness and his partner, Deputy Khalia Satkiewicz, were both seriously wounded in the Oct. 16, 2014 shooting, according to The Chicago Tribune.

The deputies arrived at a home in Holiday Hills for a well-being check when a man opened fire on them with an AR-15 rifle.

The shooting triggered a 16-hour manhunt that led to the arrest of Scott Peters, who resided in the home. He has since been convicted of attempted murder and is serving a 135-year sentence.

State's Attorney Louis Bianchi said that Maness died Monday during a rehab session.

"I'm as devastated as every other law enforcement (official) in this area and across the country," Bianchi said. "To lose another hero like this in the line of duty … this guy was a real hero."

The coroner's office will determine whether Maness' death is related to the injuries he sustained in the shooting. Depending on the outcome, prosecutors could consider mounting a murder case against Peters.

"I had a conversation with him about a week ago, and he was enthusiastic about regaining his strength and returning to patrol," McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim told the newspaper. "This news is devastating to the law enforcement community here in McHenry County."

Maness worked close to 8 years with the Sheriff's Office and also served as a field training officer, a member of the SWAT team and a first aid instructor. Previously, he served 20 years in the U.S. Army, seeing active duty in Operation Desert Storm, and retired as a sergeant first class.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
