Goforth, who was ambushed while pumping gas into his police cruiser on Aug. 28, was remembered as a loving father and husband and a servant to his community, according to The Houston Chronicle.

"He was one of the good guys, one who made a difference," Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said during the service at the Second Baptist Church.

"We are so sorry for your loss," he said to the deputy's family, "but this is a loss suffered by the community as well."

Harris County Sheriff's Office chaplain Sgt. Shannon told Goforth's wife, Kathleen, "Your son and daughter just inherited about 4,000 surrogate parents ... You're not going to walk alone."

Officers from around the country -- including representatives from the New York Police Department -- made the trip to honor the fallen deputy.

Authorities charged 30-year-old Shannon Jaruay Miles was charged with capital murder in Goforth's death.
