A Dade County, Ga. Sheriff's deputy suffered a fatal heart attack before work Friday morning.

Deputy Mark Garner was at home preparing for the day when he collapsed, according to WRCB-TV.

The 53-year-old worked as the CHAMPS Officer at Dade and Davis Elementary schools.

During his law enforcement career, he worked for the South Pittsburg Police, Marion County and Dade County Sheriff's Departments. He also was a longtime school board member for the Richard Hardy Memorial School.

Garner is survived by his wife and their daughters.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
