Illinois Sheriff's Deputy Killed in Cruiser Crash

Tazewell County Deputy Craig S. Whisenand was killed in a crash while he was responding to a call.

A Tazewell County, Ill. Sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash while responding to a call late Monday night.

Deputy Craig S. Whisenand was responding to a report of a domestic disturbance in Armington around 10:30 p.m. when he became involved in a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Springfield Road and Tomm Road.

Another deputy disocered the wreck at approximately 11:58 p.m. Attempts to render aid were unsuccessful and the 44-year-old deputy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown and is being investigated by the Illinois State Police and the Tazewell County Coroner's Office.

Whisenand began his career as a Corrections Officer at the Tazewell County Jail in 2000 and was appointed as a deputy sheriff in 2005.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
