Officer Dies at Wold Police & Fire Games
A police officer from Brazil died in a cycling crash during the 2015 World Police & Fire Games in Northern Virginia Thursday afternoon.
Police Inspector Carlos Silva and other cyclists in the event were traveling at a high rate of speed down a descent in the Prince William Forest Park in Triangle around 12:30 p.m. when a rider's tire blew, causing chain-reaction, according to WJLA-TV.
Silva, a member of the Civil Police of the Federal District of Brazil, was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and was pronounced dead around 5 p.m.
"He loved to be here and he loved to train and most of all he loved his career and his daughter," Alexandre Manzan, Silva's roommate during these games and his co-worker in Brazil, told the news station.
Ryan Levins, a chief ranger with the National Park Service, and a third rider from Canada were also hospitalized for injuries.
Late Thursday night, police from around the area gathered at Inova Fairfax Hospital in a show of support.
The World Police & Fire Games will go on as scheduled and officials say they are in the process of organizing a local memorial service for Silva.
