Georgia Sheriff Dies in Crash During Pursuit

Montgomery County Sheriff Ladson O'Connor was killed in a high-speed pursuit early Tuesday.

The sheriff of Montgomery County, Ga. was killed in a high-speed pursuit early Tuesday morning and the suspect was arrested after more than 8 hours on the run

Sheriff Ladson O'Connor had joined the chase around shortly after 1 a.m. on Georgia Highway 56 near the Toombs/Montgomery County line as backup when the suspect's vehicle sped into his direction, according to WTOC-TV.

Officials said that it is still unknown what cause O'Connor to crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspects in the fleeing vehicle were identified as 35-year-old Jim Edward Lowery and 36-year-old Dixie Best.

While deputies arrested Best right away, Lowery remained continued to elude authorities until around 9:15 a.m.

The couple is facing multiple charges.

O'Connor leaves behind his wife and four children.
