An officer with the Edmonton Police Service was fatally shot Monday night and a second officer was injured.
Constable Daniel Woodall, 35, was killed when several officers came under fire while executing a warrant at a home in the Callingwood area around 8 p.m., according to The Edmonton Journal.
Woodall was hit several times and was pronounced dead on the scene.
"His job was to protect all of us from harm, victimization, and criminal activity. We will forever be in his debt for his actions this evening," Police Chief Rod Knecht told reporters following Woodall's death.
The 35-year-old officer served with the department for eight years and was a member of the hate crimes unit.
The second injured officer, identified as Sgt. Jason Harley, is expected to make a full recovery. Harley was hit by a bullet in the lower back but was saved by his bulletproof vest.
After the shooting, a large fire started at the house, burning it to the ground. Knecht told reporters that no suspects were in custody, but said he didn't believe there was a further risk to the public.
