Alabama Police Officer Killed in Cruiser Crash

A Loxley, Ala. police sergeant died from his injuries following a crash Monday afternoon.

Sgt. Charles K. "Kerry" Mitchum, 57, was airlifted to a local hospital and pronounced dead following the single-vehicle wreck near Stapleton, according to Gulf Coast News Today.

Officials said that he was en route to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office firing range around 3 p.m. when his department vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

A longtime member of the police department, Mitchum was named Officer of the Year in 2011.

During the award recognition, Police Chief Chip Cason said that Mitchum was "the poster child for the all-around good guy in the police department."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
