An Ingham County, Mich. Sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash early Sunday morning during a pursuit.
Deputy Grant Whitaker was pursuing a vehicle on Dexter Trail shortly after 2 a.m. when his patrol vehicle left the road and struck a tree, according to The Lansing State Journal.
Officials said that the 25-year-old deputy and a colleague in a separate vehicle were pursuing the suspect when the crash occurred. Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth said that the fleeing driver remained at large Sunday afternoon.
State police said that a traffic violation apparently triggered the initial pursuit, although the incident remained under investigation.
Whitaker had been with the sheriff's department for about 18 months and previously worked for the Stockbridge Police Department.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
