A veteran Jefferson County, Colo. motorcycle deputy was killed in a head-on crash Sunday morning.
Sgt. David Baldwin died in the collision, which occurred near West 64th Parkway around 10:30 a.m., according to a sheriff's office press release.
Jefferson County Sheriff's Office officials said that the veteran deputy was driving northbound on Route 93 when the driver of a Saturn SUV tried to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone.
The driver of the SUV, 83-year-old Kenneth Hosch, crossed the double yellow lane and struck the deputy's motorcycle.
The deputy was thrown from his department-issued Harley-Davidson. Despite wearing his helmet and eye protection, the deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Baldwin was a highly-decorated 27-year veteran of the agency, as well as a military veteran in the United States Air Force.
"It takes a special kind of person to take an oath to protect and serve their community, and to constantly place the safety of others above their own," Sheriff Ted Mink said in a statement. "Dave will be remembered for his love of family, his duty to service, and his dedication to this community."
Hosch was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries. Officials said that charges are pending.
Investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The crash is currently under investigation.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
