A U.S. Capitol Police sergeant died last week after collapsing while protecting the halls of Congress.
A memorial service for Sgt. Clinton J. Holtz -- who died on Jan. 17 -- is planned for Feb. 5 at the Riva Trace Baptist Church in Anne Arundel County, according to The Washington Post.
The 44-year-old veteran of the force was known as a "gentle giant" to his colleagues. The former professional basketball player stood nearly 7 feet tall.
After spending 10 years playing for teams in Portugal, Germany, Finland and Israel in the 1990s after graduating college, he followed the lead of his late father, Walter, who was a Baltimore City police officer.
"Sergeant Holtz was an extraordinary model of what it means to be truly dedicated to law enforcement," Capitol Police Chief Kim C. Dine said in a statement. "I am overwhelmed by the countless stories shared with me that represent Sergeant Holtz as a true gentleman, wholly respected, loved and admired by his friends, family and colleagues for his kindness and work ethic.
"He was a highly respected man of exemplary character who made an indelible mark on the USCP and will truly be missed."
Holtz is is survived by his mother and two sisters.
Funeral arrangements
Visitation for Officer Holtz will be held Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Riva Trace Baptist Church, 475 West Central Avenue, Davidsonville, Md. A memorial service will follow.
